Low-code and AI: the future of digital design

evolving event making

Digital design: a critical success factor.

Digital transformation in the industrial world is experiencing unprecedented acceleration. Companies are investing in digital solutions not only to streamline processes and reduce costs, but to improve productivity and develop new data-driven business models. In this evolving scenario digital design is no longer an aesthetic or functional detail, it has become a strategic factor for success.

We talked about this at the Low-code day” organized by Siemens Mendix last month at the Ferrari museum in Modena.

From product to service: a new value paradigm.

The value pool has shifted decisively from hardware to software, services, and integrated solutions. Subscription, pay-per-use, product-as-a-service: these are the new models driving innovation. The focus is shifting from mere product functionality to the ability to deliver digital-first experiences with high perceived value.

In this context, an intuitive, immersive and adaptive user interface can determine the success or failure of a solution. Indeed, that is the focal point where the customer encounters, perceives and exchanges value with the brand delivering the service. We see this as much in consumer platforms such as Spotify, which turn every interaction into a moment of emotional engagement, as in enterprise systems such as Salesforce, where the quality of the user experience directly affects productivity and the value perceived by the customer. This is where trust is built, relationships are strengthened, and perceptions of quality are consolidated.

Design and AI: a new alliance.

Generative artificial intelligence is redefining the boundaries of digital design. From the automatic generation of layouts and UI components — which enables the creation of consistent, responsive interfaces in a matter of moments from simple textual input or design data - to the real-time optimization of the user experience, where AI analyzes user behavior to dynamically adapt content, flows, and micro-interactions based on the context of use, AI enables designers to focus on what really matters: creativity, strategy, and value.

When adopted strategically, AI can:

  • Accelerate development through assisted prototyping tools
  • Generate design variants based on usage data
  • Improve accessibility and personalization
  • Optimize interfaces for different devices and contexts

Far from being just an automation tool, AI has become a real driver of innovation.

Towards faster, more modular and scalable digital design.

The increasing complexity of the digital landscape requires a step change. Companies must adopt more agile processes, low-code/no-code tools, iterative methodologies and evolved design systems to accelerate the creation of effective and consistent experiences. Digital design can no longer be fragmented or handcrafted: reusable components, standardized frameworks and platforms capable of ensuring consistency, scalability and speed are needed. Accessibility also plays a crucial role. Digital experiences must be inclusive and universal, designed for complex industrial environments and for users with different levels of technological expertise.

Innovation and speed: two interconnected levers.

In today’s environment innovation can no longer be separated from efficiency. Companies must react quickly to market changes balancing speed and quality.

This means rethinking the entire design and development journey, making each stage more fluid and responsive: from the initial idea to the concrete realization of the product. Only an integrated approach, combining rapid prototyping, generative AI and automated workflows, can ensure tangible and sustainable results.

New model for digital design.

The traditional model, based on customized consultations and relationships built over time, remains viable for very complex projects but shows limitations when it comes to rapid and scalable growth. In an increasingly competitive global market, clarity of offerings, transparency of costs and speed in activating solutions make all the difference. For this reason, digital design needs to evolve into an on-demand service: simple to choose, activate and scale, without the need for lengthy preliminary steps or complex negotiations.

Future is already here.

The future of digital design is about experiences that intelligently adapt to users’ needs, anticipate their requirements, and create real value in every interaction. Companies that manage to integrate design with artificial intelligence and more agile processes will be able to offer faster, more effective and personalized solutions, thus gaining a key competitive advantage.

In this new scenario, we are moving toward the creation of increasingly agile, intelligent and collaborative platforms that will enable a radical transformation in the way we design digital experiences. The direction is set: the digital design of the future will be a strategic lever to innovate, grow and compete in global markets.
